When I first “met” Alice she filled out my contact form on my website. I have a section that says, “Tell Me Something Awesome” and one of my favorite things about meeting new clients is seeing what they put in this box. It’s always different, sometimes epic, sometimes intimate, sometimes it reads like a confession of a guilty pleasure, sometimes inquiring clients go on and on about their cats…whatever it is – it’s always the highlight of a new inquiry! This was definitely the case when Alice’s email said, “I once sat in my basement watching the LOTR trilogy back-to-back consuming only ice cream and popcorn” in the Tell Me Something Awesome box.
I knew we’d be kindred LOTR spirits because I have spent many days doing the same thing. Lord of the Rings fans are pretty amazing! Alice and Taylor were eloping in Downtown Denver at the courthouse and wanted me to follow them around doing epic photos in RiNo and later in the mountains. We hit all three spots and Taylor’s mom even showed up for the little ceremony, which was a great little addition to the moment.
One of the things I love about courthouse ceremonies is when you have a judge there. Although it’s not required when getting married in Colorado (you can marry yourselves here anywhere), having a judge brings a different energy to the moment. I also have yet to meet a judge at a courthouse ceremony who isn’t loving every minute of this part of their jobs. They spend all day dealing with angry and unhappy folks who are going through big struggles, so they always remark on their love for doing elopements.
I love these little elopements because it also gives me something extra special to be apart of. I know that having a photographer is a nice luxury for an elopement, but it’s extra fantastic to be one of the ONLY folks seeing you get married. Sometimes I even have the special privilege of signing the marriage license too! I was so thrilled I got to be apart of this day with Alice and Taylor and document some of their favorite spots in Denver!
