We began a new era in family dog ownership a couple of weeks ago. We adopted DoGtor Watson!
One of the first things people “knew” me for on the internet was our family of three dogs (and eventually four). They were popular on Instagram back when Instagram filters were a phase for me. I started out my dog ownership path alone with Opal, a dalmatian pointer mix, in 2006, who passed away last year in 2019. Then we adopted Rufus, a basset, in 2009 at 3 years old and lost him in 2018. These two lived some of the most spoiled dog lives that I’m sure all dog owners can imagine. We also adopted Lily, a dalmatian pitbull mix, in 2010 when we bought our first house. We thought she’d be a good buddy for Opal with her exuberant personality, but it turns out Opal always wanted to just be an “only dog.” Opal, Rufus, and Lily never got along. They never cuddled. They got in many dog fights. They were a mess.
Eventually, we decided Lily needed a friend and when we moved across Colorado knowing that Opal and Rufus were getting older, we added Sherlock Bones, a Catahoula leopard, to the mix in 2017. Owning 4 dogs was a wild ride, but it was a brief one. Despite having a baby, both of us noticed the distinct lack of puppy paws on laminate floors at home. 2 dogs, with Lily getting older, seemed quiet (even though we’ve got a toddler). Sherlock is still young and probably needed a buddy other than Howie. We started searching to see if we could find a guy who would be a good fit and that’s how we found Dogtor Watson, Sherlock Bones’ new best bud. We’re excited to welcome this super mutt into our house. He was a stray so the rescue knew little to nothing about him. We took Howie to meet him and they seemed to get along. So, he came home with us. He just turned into the sweetest pup we’ve probably ever owned. Not that our others aren’t or weren’t sweet, but Watson is a regular old dog – he’s not as quirky as our others were. He’s sweet with Howie, plays with Sherlock, and everything else we could want in a dog.
Here are a few photos of Howie, the dogs and our life lately. I snuck in a couple of Dogtor Watson too!
